There was an exciting off-site visit for gallery Coordinator Thea Treweek this week – a tour around the new artschool gallery in Crakehall. Brainchild of Guy Masterman, this intimate venture allows you to enter his home and gardens to see his own sculptural works and other pieces by a range of artists. The works he has collected are all things he loves, and visitors can either be shown around personally or use a bespoke designed digital guide to explore the rooms and works.
Artschool is a brave and cohesive mix of contemporary, abstract and traditional, with a handful of household design works added to the mix. Guy’s lamps can be made to order as can other items and the entirety of the house is testament to quality design and function. It feels both personal and ‘showcasey’ at the same time. The venture is still young and as time goes on, Guy sees it growing into something possibly encompassing outside opportunities and even more artists being part of the collection.
‘It felt like a treat and privilege to be able to wander around someone’s personal space with the sole purpose of properly looking at all their treasures’ says Thea, ‘Guy was informative and knowledgeable, and his extensive travel means he has work by people little known in this country and you realise how rare it is to see things that are totally new to you. I loved every minute of being there’ Thea Treweek, The Station, Richmond
